California

After starting and saving this post for the past week, it feels good to finally publish it!

Two days after Ava's birthday, we headed out to California for the wedding of Matt's friends from college, Matt and Stacey. I had never been to Los Angeles, so I was really excited about the trip. I was also excited because my good friends from Utah, the Ahles family, met us there for a reunion. We hadn't seen them since we moved to PA two years ago!

Hollywood!

I was so proud of how well Ava did on the flights. She actually laughed while we were taking off on our first flight. And on the second one, she fell asleep just as we took off. She is a fantastic little traveler and she helped to ease my flying anxieties, too. I didn't even have time to get nervous about it. Ava did have a difficult time with the 3 hour time difference, but we were expecting that, so it wasn't a surprise.

Having fun on the flight to LA

We flew out on Thursday morning and got into LA around noon. After getting our rental car, we headed to our hotel and were planning on just relaxing for the afternoon and evening. Nicole, Tim, and Cohen were staying with Nicole's aunt and they decided to head down to see us. It was so great to see them and to be able to catch up. Ava and Cohen, who is just one month younger than Ava, got to meet for the first time and were so cute together.

On Friday, we went to The Griddle which is a great breakfast spot. We even saw Ian Ziering, from the original Beverly Hills 90210! After eating the biggest pancakes I've ever seen, we did some touristy things and went to the Kodak Theater and the walk of fame. There was some event going on and we saw Mel Brooks.

We then decided to head down to the Santa Monica Pier and introduced Ava to the sand for the first time. I didn't know how she'd react, but she LOVED it! Maybe we should trade the snow for the sand?

I had to include a video of Ava playing in the sand.

After a long day, we were ready to go back to the hotel and relax. We checked into our hotel which was on Sunset Blvd. and it gave us a great view of downtown LA. I was dreading the infamous LA traffic, but it really wasn't that bad. Ava and Matt took a quick dip in the rooftop pool before we started getting Ava ready for bed. Matt went out with a bunch of his friends and as he was going to bed at 2:00, Ava decided it'd be a good time to wake up! Somehow Matt managed to sleep through Ava screaming about 4 feet away from him.

On Saturday, we just hung out around the hotel. We spent a lot of time at the pool. It was nice to lay out in the beautiful weather. Nicole offered to babysit Ava while we went to the wedding, so she came over to our hotel as we were getting ready. This was the first time that I had left Ava with anyone other than family members, but Ava always does great with other people and I had total confidence in Nicole, so I wasn't too worried.

We headed to the Four Seasons Beverly Hills where the wedding was held. Earlier in the day people had seen Russell Crow and Scarlet Johannsen, so I was keeping my eyes peeled, but I didn't see anyone. The ceremony was held outside and it was gorgeous. Stacey looked beautiful and Matt (the groom, not my Matt) made me tear up as he watched anxiously for his bride. After the ceremony, we headed inside for the cocktail hour and then the reception. Everything about the wedding was just beautiful and I'm happy that Matt and I went.

The newlyweds, Matt and Stacey!

We got back to our hotel around 1:00 which Ava thought was a good time to get up. Luckily I hadn't had too much to drink so I took the early shift while Matt got some sleep. Matt wouldn't be happy that I'm sharing this, but he doesn't ever read the blog, so whatever... at one point, I told Matt to wake up and watch Ava so I could go to the bathroom and the next thing I know I hear a thud which was Ava falling off of the bed...Thankfully she was okay.

On Sunday, we went to a brunch that Matt and Stacey hosted and got to visit with them a little more. They also got to meet Ava which they were really excited about. After brunch, we went to Manhattan Beach which is where Matt lived when he was out there. We met up with Nicole, Tim, and Cohen and the kids played in the sand while we hung out. It was a pretty cloudy, windy day, but it was still fun to spend a little more time with the Ahles clan. After a while, we said our goodbyes and headed to our respective places.

The next day, we woke up early and headed home. We had a good flight and Ava did really well. We had an awesome trip and I won't hesitate to fly anywhere with Ava again!

Tuckered out from a fun trip!

1 year!!!

Wow, I can't believe how ridiculously overdue this post is... I really don't even know where to start.

Ava turned 1 on April 19. A week later it's finally starting to sink in that I have a 1 year old. I can't believe how quickly the past year has gone by. We had Ava's birthday party the Saturday before her birthday and we had a great time. She got her first taste of cake which she loved. My sister baked Ava her own special cake with no sugar so that it was a little healthier than regular cake. It tasted a lot like banana bread and clearly Ava enjoyed it.

Ava is going to town on her cake!

Matt's parents came down for the party and brought a surprise with them-they flew Matt's brother in from New Orleans! Neither of us had any idea that he was coming, so it was a great surprise. He hadn't seen Ava since Christmas and I think that he was pretty impressed with how much she had grown and how much is able to do now.

A few friends were here for the party too, but there weren't too many people. It was nice just having a small group. It definitely kept things mellow and not too overwhelming for Ava. She was able to play with my friend Teisha's son Gavin who is 7 months, and her daughter Adria who will be 2 in July.

A few days after her birthday, we went to the doctor for her 12 month check up. Ava's doctor told me that she looked perfect, which I know but is always good to hear from a trained medical professional. She has slowed slightly on her growth, the doctor said that she will start to grow at her own rate now since she doesn't have to catch up anymore. Here is a comparison of her 6, 9, and 12 month stats:

6 months 9 months 12 months
weight: 15.6 lbs. 18.3 19.1
length: 25 1/4" 28" 29"
head circumference: 16 1/4" 16 3/4 17.5

Ava also had her appointment with a NICU doctor at the developmental clinic. They do this every 6 months for the first 2 years. They were very impressed with how well Ava is doing and said that verbally she is at the 12 month mark and beyond. She is right on target with her gross and fine motor skills, as well. I really wasn't worried about anything because I think that she's doing great and I know she's perfect!

After the clinic and before her dr. appt., we had some time to kill, so we headed up to the NICU to visit some of the nurses. They had just started building a new NICU when Ava left the hospital and it is almost all finished now. It's awesome. It's so much bigger and seems much more quiet. As nice as it is, I hope that we never have an extended stay there. The nurses and the head neonatologist were all excited to see Ava. They remembered her well and were so surprised with how big she has gotten. Ava charmed them and was showing off the whole time. It was great to see some of the women who helped care for Ava when she needed it the most. They will always have a special place in my heart.
